Survival Should Have Been Done Better: The Raft - S.A Bodeen

The RaftThe Raft by S.A Bodeen
Date Released: August 21, 2012
Publisher:
Feiwel & Friends
Pages: 231 Pages
Format: Hardcover
Source: Library
Rating: Could Have Been Better
Series: Standalone!

Goodreads Synopsis:Robie is an experienced traveler. She’s taken the flight from Honolulu to the Midway Atoll, a group of Pacific islands where her parents live, many times. When she has to get to Midway in a hurry after a visit with her aunt in Hawaii, she gets on the next cargo flight at the last minute. She knows the pilot, but on this flight, there’s a new co-pilot named Max. All systems are go until a storm hits during the flight. The only passenger, Robie doesn’t panic until the engine suddenly cuts out and Max shouts at her to put on a life jacket. They are over miles of Pacific Ocean. She sees Max struggle with a raft.

And then . . . she’s in the water. Fighting for her life. Max pulls her onto the raft, and that’s when the real terror begins. They have no water. Their only food is a bag of Skittles. There are sharks. There is an island. But there’s no sign of help on the way.

From Goodreads

The Raft was a book that I had huge expectations when I came to picking it up from the library. I love survival books completely right next to academy books, it's my weakness! But The Raft ended up being a book filled with choppy sentences, lack of spark, and ultimately ended up being a disappointment. I heard Bodeen's other books were great, but after reading The Raft, I'm not sure what to expect.

Robie knows how to travel and knows what to expect as an experience traveler. After taking a flight from Honolulu to Midway Atoll and went on the last cargo flight, she doesn't know what she has to do. After crashing down, Robie and Max have to survive at sea with a bag of skittles as their food. Max was such an awkward and unbelievable character! Seriously, this guy doesn't help Robie at all and she has to learn the ropes herself and <ax never talked but when he did it was just too weird. I get where Bodeen could have come from writing Max this way. It could happen like having someone who is unbelievable and doesn't help, so it has a realistic factor. Robie was a bit iffy to me. Bodeen spent a good one to two pages describing these birds, I was seriously about to drop this book off. *hits head* Like I get it's a survival book, but please make the action or survival feel better. It had so much potential, it just ended up being disappointing.

Filled with little promise but good potential, The Raft won't appeal to much readers. If you do want a okay survival read pick up The Raft, but don't go into it with high hopes! It was a quickie and I just might pick up Bodeen's other books.

Compelling & Human: Linked - Imogen Howson

Linked (Linked #1)Linked by Imogen Howson
Date Released: June 11, 2013
Publisher: Simon and Schuster

Pages: 368 Pages
Format: ARC
Source: ARC from Teenreads as part of the TeenBoards program
Rating: Really Liked
Series: (Linked #1)

Goodreads Synopsis: Elissa used to have it all: looks, popularity, and a bright future. But for the last three years, she’s been struggling with terrifying visions, phantom pains, and mysterious bruises that appear out of nowhere.

Finally, she’s promised a cure: minor surgery to burn out the overactive area of her brain. But on the eve of the procedure, she discovers the shocking truth behind her hallucinations: she’s been seeing the world through another girl’s eyes.

Elissa follows her visions, and finds a battered, broken girl on the run. A girl—Lin—who looks exactly like Elissa, down to the matching bruises. The twin sister she never knew existed.

Now, Elissa and Lin are on the run from a government who will stop at nothing to reclaim Lin and protect the dangerous secrets she could expose—secrets that would shake the very foundation of their world.

Riveting, thought-provoking and utterly compelling, Linked will make you question what it really means to be human.

From Goodreads

Linked was a book filled with promise and it did deliver in some parts but I was always looking for something more in the story to made it a stronger debut novel. I was so happy and excited to pick up Linked, it was such a great blend of all the good elements in a dystopian novel add action and suspense with complex characters that I love reading about! The best part, it wasn't a romance driven novel but Imogen gives us hints of it throughout the novel as a tease, so romance readers this might not be your forte. There was a lot of promise in this book, and I'll definitely recommend it to any reader in YA! :)

Elissa used to have everything in her life she wants but behind all of it, she's dealing with strange visions and horrible pains she can't handle. Her doctor, Dr. Brien says that she can either have surgery to remove a part of her brain to stop all the horrible things happening to Elissa or live with it. But soon Elissa faces more challenges that made me like her a lot for her strength, especially when she meets Lin, a runaway girl. I love Elissa and Lin a lot! They were relatable and I liked seeing how each one adapted to the life in Sekoia. Both Lin and Elissa gave the novel that runaway/rebellious feel that speaks wide to any teen reader who picks this up. The characters aren't forgettable and I can't wait to see how they develop in the next book. Readers get some great sister love, some action scenes, and question humanity in this book.

Linked also brings up cool and intriguing things like this connection with Elissa and Lin that could have been expanded more, the outer space world, and great action scenes. Some parts of the book fell, like how Elissa and Lin do something and final get on a ship it was just page after page all about space and this ship. I was crossing my fingers it wouldn't be that long but it was almost towards the ending! But there was tension and suspense within those chapters as a bonus.

Linked was a "semi" fresh idea especially in YA and I know it can develop into a more complex and in depth book especially with the promise in the characters and plot. I would so recommend Linked to any one wanting a start of a great series with hints of romance, survival, and loads of action. I for sure liked this one a lot so definitely give Linked a try!

Spellbinding & Fresh: Time Between Us - Tamara Ireland Stone

Time Between Us (Time Between Us, #1)Time Between Us by Tamara Ireland Stone
Date Released: October 12, 2012
Publisher: Hyperion

Pages: 331 pages
Format: Hardcover
Source: For review
Rating: LOVED
Series: (Time Between Us #1)
:))
Goodreads Synopsis: Anna and Bennett were never supposed to meet: she lives in 1995 Chicago and he lives in 2012 San Francisco. But Bennett has the unique ability to travel through time and space, which brings him into Anna’s life, and with him a new world of adventure and possibility.

As their relationship deepens, the two face the reality that time may knock Bennett back to where he belongs, even as a devastating crisis throws everything they believe into question. Against a ticking clock, Anna and Bennett are forced to ask themselves how far they can push the bounds of fate, what consequences they can bear in order to stay together, and whether their love can stand the test of time.

Fresh, exciting, and deeply romantic, Time Between Us is a stunning, spellbinding debut from an extraordinary new voice in YA fiction.

From Goodreads

I never read any time travel books at all, and after reading Time Between Us, it's for sure not my last. Time Between Us was a perfect blend of romance, tensions, and heartbreaking choices.

When you do a time travel book you either have to make it unique and exciting or it will be cliche, the time travel aspect in Time Between Us was surprisingly done differently and fresh. Add some great characters like Anna and Bennett you have a great story of two star crossed lovers against time. Anna lives in 1995 Chicago while mysterious and odd, Bennett lives in 2012S San Fran and they diverge paths. Anna has only one thing on her mind is too travel the world, she even has a map with red pins on places she plans to go in the future. But meeting Bennett, it changes her life and she discovers more than what lays in her cold  and way too quiet town of Chicago.

Anna and Bennett's relationship was a bit shaky at time for me but it held strong all the way to the end. I loved the scenes where Bennett takes Anna to all sorts of places, but only places in his year and never messing up the past or future. Anna as fun and likable and she made the book light and easy to read. Tamara easily takes any reader and whisks them into a such a captivating world. I would so love to time travel also! It would be so cool to go to places and experience new things :) Time Between Us also faces readers with questions of time travel and love. Will it be worth it? How long can I wait? The book also focuses on the challenges Anna and Bennett face for the future and now and it was short of bittersweet.

Time Between Us is a light, romantic, and semi - bittersweet novel between two star crossed lovers who are against time. It was such a light read, it's perfect for summer and I can't wait to pick up book 2 for Bennett's perspective!

“I, for one, am ready for a lot more adventure and a lot less nothing.”

Blog Tour: An Enthralling & Amazing Ending: Shutdown - Heather Anastasiu

Shutdown (Glitch, #3)Shutdown by Heather Anastasiu
Date Released: July 2, 2012
Publisher: St. Martin's Press

Pages: 320 Pages
Format: E-Galley
Source: For Review
Rating: LOVED
Series: (Glitch #3)

Goodreads Synopsis: The battle is all but over, and hope seems to be lost. Zoe and her fellow Resistance fighters are on the run, having lost their home, their protection, and their leader. They are outnumbered and outmatched by the powerful corporation that controls the world, and the cruel Chancellor is inches away from completing a scheme that would kill most of humanity. Zoe's only remaining option is to chase the impossible dream of upending the Link system, freeing the world from the hardware that controls their thoughts and emotions, and hope it will trigger a revolution.

The plot requires a nearly impossible mission to infiltrate the dangerous Community, and it is a task that Zoe must unfortunately complete alone. With challenges and surprises at every turn, nothing goes according to plan. Adrien's visions of the future now show two possible outcomes: one in which they succeed, and one in which humanity falls. It all lies in Zoe's hands.

Full of romance, high-adrenaline action and shocking twists, Shutdown is a heart-pounding conclusion to an exciting sci-fi adventure trilogy for young adults.

The thrilling conclusion to an action-packed sci-fi trilogy

From Goodreads

I am so excited to share with you my stop for Heather Anastasiu's Shutdown blog tour with a review! Be sure to stop by the other stops today also :)

Shutdown by Heather Anastasiu is even better than it's preceders with intense action, surprising revelations, and it will leave you breathless! Heather definitely kicks it up way more in her finale in the Glitch series. I grew so close to these characters since the first book and it's bittersweet to see it to an end, especially if you love sci - fi with a dash of dystopians and you decided to pick it up :)

In the first book with got to see Zoe's world, in the second book we see the struggles of her world along with Adrien, and in last book we see such an epic conclusion. Zoe's choices was a big factor in this book. There's also something distant with Adrien and Zoe that make the stakes higher and the Rez is gone. I definitely could relate to Zoe so much more in this book and the feeling she has toward Adrien, the Chancellor, everyone it was real. It was kinda heartbreaking that there wasn't as much romance scenes with Zoe and Adrien in this one, since there was something wrong with him, but the scenes they shared were so special and simple.  But still...this was a "different" Adrien! So readers be prepared. *Sighs* But, there's a lot of action with Zoe using her cool telekinesis with the other Glitchers which was amazing!

Shutdown strikes a balance with it's characters, action, and suspense which made me love it even better. The characters we meet in Override like Ginni and Xona were my favorites in the book since they were so fun to read and they were real.I loved reading about they especially the conversations they had, it was hilarious! Zoe was such a strong and impactful leader...I'll tell you that Shutdown does end on a amazing and strong note too. I was blown away by this book!

The plot was short of brilliance! It wasn't a heavy read, but it was light and filled with the perfect amount of action and suspense. Heather hits some high notes in creating such a diverse and well - thought of dystopian world and gets it's reader at the edge of their seat. This was one of my favorite reads this year! Yes yes it was! If you haven't picked up Glitch, do so now! *Grabs the book and hands it over* I would definitely recommend this book to any YA reader and it's light and fresh for summer also :) Heather will leave you breathless and amazed with Shutdown, no doubt.

Waiting on Wednesday (#35) - Learning Not To Drown by Anna Shinoda

Waiting on Wednesday is Hosted by Jill @ Breaking The Spine

Learning Not to Drown

There is a pecking order to every family. Seventeen-year old Clare is the overprotected baby; Peter is the typical, rebellious middle child; and Luke is the-can't-do wrong favorite. To their mother, they are a normal, happy family. And then there are the roles we give ourselves. Clare: the ambitious striver; Peter: the angry ticking time bomb; and Luke: a drug addicted, convicted felon who has been in and out of jail for as long as Clare can remember. To Clare, they are a family on the verge of disaster. Clare has long refused to believe her brother is truly bad...he dotes her, doesn't he? But as Clare starts piecing together the truth about her brother's stints in jail, it starts changing the way she thinks about him. It has also changes the way the community views the family. The only thing it hasn't changed is the way their mother feels about Luke. Each time she welcomes him home with open arms and brushes off his crimes as "wrong place and wrong time," Clare can feel a little piece of her happy home life being taken away. And when her mother does the unthinkable--takes Clare's hard-earned college savings to post bail for Luke's latest transgression--Clare has to decide if sticking up for herself and her future means selfishly turning her back on family...or if it's the only way to keep herself from drowning along with them.

Debut novelist Anna Shinoda's raw, gritty, powerful novel cuts right to the bone and brings to life the skeletons the lurk in the closet.

Why I'm Waiting For It: I saw this on a blogger's blog a while back and I knew it had to be my WoW! I'm in love with the cover and the first line hooked me! I hope this book turns out to be one of those rare gems in YA in 2014 and I honestly want to get an ARC of this!

Tidal (Watersong, #3)Tidal by Amanda Hocking
Date Released: June 4, 2013
Publisher: St. Martin's Press

Pages: 342 Pages
Format: Hardcover

Rating: LOVED
Series: (Watersong #3)

Goodreads Synopsis:  With Penn and Lexi determined to kill Gemma and replace her with another siren, Gemma's life is in grave danger...unless she can break the curse before it's too late. With the help of Harper and Daniel, she'll delve deep into her enemies' mythical past--and their darkest secrets. It's her only hope of saving everything she holds dear: her family, her life, and her relationship with Alex--the only guy she's ever loved.

From Goodreads

Tidal was simply an amazing book! There was so much more at stake in Tidal with higher tensions between the sirens against Gemma and Harper. Tidal was definitely an thrilling, fast - paced, and riveting book. The cover? I'm in love with it.

Tidal is quick to recap it's readers of what happened in the last two books. The siren's are living in town with Gemma and Harper as part of the agreement Gemma made with Penn. Gemma thinks their safe for now, but there more danger and lies for everyone. Tidal also explores more of the sirens with even a few chapters which I think were like in the past chapters with the siren's giving the reader more insight on Penn's vivacious behavior. Those were on of my favorite parts of the book also. It was nice seeing the series develop more and expand then just leaving on what it it. With the stakes higher, readers will love the action Hocking manages to build up and it will have you turning to the last page.

One thing that set Tidal apart from the other watersong books it how more in depth it it. There wasn't a time I wanted to stop reading or take a break, because I knew something was going to happen with any of the characters. As for the characters, we see new sides to Gemma and Harper, even Thea who surprisingly grows nice to Gemma. Tidal also introduced more of the siren's history. I love the scene when Gemma, Harper, and Marcy decide to go and meet a person who knows about dealing with the supernatural. There wasA something about some scenes Hocking creates I just love and Tidal was one that showcased them perfectly.

If you're still deciding on a great summer series to read, pick up the Watersong series! It's a fun, quick, and suspenseful series that you'll love. Tidal was a perfect blend of Hocking's simplistic writing with great characters and the enchanting world of sirens!

Dark and Twisty: Override - Heather Anastasiu

Override (Glitch, #2)Glitch by Heather Anastasiu
Date Released: February 12, 2013
Publisher: St. Martin's Press

Pages: 320 Pages
Format: Paperback
Source: For Review
Rating: Love
Series: (Glitch #2)

Goodreads Synopsis: Zoe is free. She has escaped the enslavement of the Community, disconnected from the hardware that had controlled her every thought and emotion, and evaded capture by the Chancellor intent on killing her. She is finally free, but she is far from safe.

Zoe and Adrien hide themselves from detection at the Foundation, an academy that trains teen glitchers to fight in the Resistance movement. Together, Zoe and her new team of superhuman fighters must risk their lives to rescue other glitchers and humans from the Chancellor's control. Challenges abound at every turn, and Adrien, who has become silent, distant, and tormented by his visions of the future, only adds to the growing certainty of defeat. But worst of all, as Zoe's team fights against impossible odds, distrust and betrayal leads to the terrible discovery that their greatest threat could already be lurking behind the safe walls of the Foundation.

Full of high-adrenaline action and shocking twists, Heather Anastasiu's Override is an exciting continuation of this popular young adult trilogy.

From Goodreads

Override is even better, darker, and twisted than Glitch and I LOVED it! Heather Anastasiu pushes the boundaries in Override more and it was great seeing how it wasn't as focused on romance, but some kick - ass action! Tensions were rising and the stakes are higher for Zoe and Adrien.

Zoe and Adrien escaped the Community and their taking refuge at the Foundation. She meets more people like Xona and Ginni, it was great seeing more people, yet it isn't so much you lost track. Both Adrien and Zoe develop so much more and I was impressed on how pretty light this book was, even with it being sci - fi, so good job Heather! Ginni, had to be one of my favorite characters! She's bubbly and funny and it made the book more fun to read too. Plus, she has the power to track people down. Amazing right?

Heather definitely knows how to writes amazing action scenes, especially the ending which was crazy! I was able to actually see them come alive in my mind and it was blown away! We also get to see more of Zoe's telekinesis and Adrien's visions, which pose a threat to everyone. Glitchers and "powers" are explained a bit more and it refreshed my memory on them. The sequel was better than the first book for sure! It was so great to see such a amazing series in YA that strikes a balance between a book that is suspenseful, sci - fi, and dystopian!

image

Jennifer Lawrence :)

Now, the romance part of Override was great since it wasn't a HUGE part of the novel like most YA books. Things were at stake for Zoe and Adrien it was cool seeing how Zoe raised up and took the situation into her own hands. And that thing Heather did with Adrien was crazy! You'll definitely want to pick Override up because of it! I honestly didn't see it coming at all! Override was Glitch with even better characters, deeper plots, and a bigger cast of characters that don't weigh down the book but make it light and fresh! I loved it and pick this up now!

Waiting on Wednesday (#34) - The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black

Waiting on Wednesday is Hosted by Jill @ Breaking The Spine

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown

Tana lives in a world where walled cities called Coldtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in a decadently bloody mix of predator and prey. The only problem is, once you pass through Coldtown’s gates, you can never leave.

One morning, after a perfectly ordinary party, Tana wakes up surrounded by corpses. The only other survivors of this massacre are her exasperatingly endearing ex-boyfriend, infected and on the edge, and a mysterious boy burdened with a terrible secret. Shaken and determined, Tana enters a race against the clock to save the three of them the only way she knows how: by going straight to the wicked, opulent heart of Coldtown itself.

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown is a wholly original story of rage and revenge, of guilt and horror, and of love and loathing from bestselling and acclaimed author Holly Black.

Why I'm Waiting For It: I love the plotline for this book! It sounds so freaking amazing and it's for sure going to be my first Holly Black book! And the cover look so spine chilling!

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown will be released on September 17, 2013 by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers.

Discussion Post: Tips on Surviving The Blogger Life

This Week's Topic:
"Tips on Surviving The Blogger Life"

image

This is REALLY what goes on when you know when you start blogging.
We bloggers all had these moments and I'm here to share some tips I learned to prevent my brain from "crying" :)

1.) Set Limits
Setting limits is one tip I learned this year and it saved me so much stress! There are days you feel like you NEED to have a post and it gets to you the whole day. I did that and whoa...there was so much stress on me and my post I NEEDED to have wasn't up to my standards. The best things is knowing when you should stress or not too. If you have a blog stop, pick up the book already and read it. If you feel like you NEED to have something up but you know it's going to cause stress and you know you don't feel like it then don't. Take a break. Watch a show. Cook. Have fun.

2.) Get Some Music On!

image

Listening to music while blogging made it so much easier! Really! It does! It helps you focus so much more on doing that stuff you need to do and it keeps you hyped up about blogging. I use Spotify to listen to my music rather than Youtube, since you always have to find the songs and when its over you have to find a new one again. Spotify can be used a a radio, or listen to the music you want to than say Pandora which has limited skips. Get Some Music On!

3.) Eat..Don't Go Starving
Worst thing you can do to yourself when blogging is starving yourself  It seriously kills to not have chips and a drink nearby when hunger strikes. Soon..this will happen:

And then you get sidetracked from blogging, you end up falling asleep, and never even got that post you actually wanted and could get up on the blog. Rule of thumb: Don't go starving!

4.) Get Twitter On!
I love having twitter on since it makes blogging more enjoyable and you can start new conversations with fellow bloggers! Having twitter on helps to just see how fun blogging is, but also it's nice to relax for a couple minutes and see what's going in the bloggingsphere without google reader..etc.

These are my tips for surviving the blogger life even if you're a beginning or novice blogger! If you have some of your own tell me in the comments! Also, if you have a question for a discussion post mention it in the comments as well :D

Wow! It's finally the start of summer for me and that means blogging, reading, and hanging out with friends! I am honestly so tired of school with the stress and homework, I can finally call the shots when to do things for summer. I'm also kicking up my reading so I can reach my goal of 80 books this year and tackling my summer TBR pile!

Animal Farm by George Orwell (For school :)

I absolutely devoured the Watersong series by Amanda Hocking! I loved all the books and she so improved from the Trylle series! These books were perfect summer reads and I can't wait for book 4. I'm liking The Extraordinary Education of Nicholas Benedict, it's a prequel to the actual series and it's good just not as good as the actual series. Hopefully it get better right? Since I'm a sophomore next year, I was thinking of reading all the books that I'll have to read next year to get a head start. I'm surprised I'm actually like Animal Farm and the concept of it.
